Cruising Houston
As a member of a professional organization I recently had an opportunity to visit Houston, the site of our national convention. Texas' largest city abounds with diversions, from sailboats and space ships to baseball and butterflies…and traffic. To navigate the Houston roadways, we engaged a Houston bus rental.

Arriving a few days in advance to take in some area attractions, the first day found us answering the call of nearby Galveston and its balmy Gulf Coast beaches. After a pleasant 60 minute trip by charter bus, we arrived in Galveston's Strand Historic District. We were delighted by the charmingly restored buildings adorned with ornate iron work, once part of Galveston's port history, now home to restaurants, boutiques, and galleries. Anchored down the street at Pier 21, some toured the Elissa, a completely restored tall ship circa 1880. We ended our day languishing in the sun and sand along the beachfront.

The next morning we reconvened aboard our Houston bus rental for the 30 minute drive to the Johnson Space Center. Here you can take a "giant step for mankind" at Space Center Houston's visitors complex, where you can enjoy an interactive experience touching actual moon rocks, and spacecraft and take a tram tour of astronaut training facilities and Mission Control.

By afternoon, we were headed to Houston's Hermann Park area. There we discovered a plethora of museums and galleries. At one stop we were able to take in the Houston Museum of Natural Science, complete with planetarium, natural history museum, and IMAX. Co-joined to the museum is a glass cone known as the Cockrell Butterfly Center, where your senses are stimulated with a walk through lush gardens surrounded by thousands of brilliant butterflies.

Butterflies not your cup of tea? Then seek out the Contemporary Arts Museum, Museum of Fine Arts, Holocaust Museum of Houston, Children's Museum of Houston, and Museum of Health & Medical Science, all a short stroll away.

Returning to our hotel to freshen up for evening activities, the group faced a fork in the road. Luckily our Houston bus rental faced no such fork as we headed downtown dressed in evening wear and jeans. Once there, those donning evening wear headed to the Wortham Theater Center, home to the Houston Ballet and Grand Opera. Our colleagues in jeans and baseball caps headed for new Enron Field, home to the Houston Astros. Successfully satiating both the wine/caviar and beer/peanut palates among us, we journeyed back to the hotel at day's end to prepare for our national convention the next day.
